2023-2024 Campaign: We Will Not Be Banned

Our mission at the Hurston/Wright Foundation is clear: to provide a nurturing space for professional and aspiring Black writers. Through workshops and classes led by award-winning authors, we empower emerging and midcareer adult writers, shaping them into the literary stars of tomorrow. Over the years, more than a thousand Black writers have thrived under our mentorship, enriching the cultural community and carving out successful careers as professors, local cultural leaders, and national thought visionaries.

But our journey is far from over. In the tumultuous year of 2022, we witnessed the rise of new voices and the disturbing trend of book banning sweeping across the nation at an alarming rate. With Texas leading the pack, banning a staggering 713 books, we are facing a critical moment where the narratives of Black characters are disproportionately silenced.
